Overview of the Region

Marine Park Drive

Whales can be found in every ocean on Earth, but the St. Lawrence River boasts more of the largest species in the world, as well as a variety of smaller cetaceans. Five or six species, including the humpback whale (15 m), the fin whale (20 m), and the blue whale—the world’s largest mammal (30 m and 140 tons)—come inland as far as the Charlevoix coastal area for feeding. Whale-watching cruises from Saint-Siméon, Baie-Sainte-Catherine and Tadoussac take visitors out to see these giants of the sea in their natural habitat and discover all the beauty of the Saguenay Fjord. A visit to the Pointe-Noire interpretation and observation center at the Saguenay–St. Lawrence Marine Park is the perfect way to learn more about sea mammals and ocean currents. Whale watching activities in Saguenay-St-Lawrence Marine Park are governed by the Regulation on Marine Activities.

Some 30 km down the road from Baie-Sainte-Catherine towards La Malbaie sits Parc d'aventure en montagne les Pallissades, the Eco-Village of Charlevoix, where visitors can admire the forest, the St. Lawrence, and the awe-inspiring geomorphology of the area. Nearby Port-au-Persil and Baie-des-Rochers entice visitors with a superb 6 km network of hiking trails through an area of unmatched calm and breathtaking beauty.
